Brief History

 In 1996 Franciscan Vocation Directors gathered at the National Religious Vocations Conference (NRVC) to dream, network, and support one another as Franciscan women engaged in the challenging ministries of vocation and formation. Out of this discussion the Next Generation of Franciscan Women was formed. One way to see its natural development is to trace the name as it evolved over the years.

Over the years, the identity of NGFM continued to evolve. Soon Franciscan Volunteer program Directors, Secular Franciscans, University personnel, others who support a Franciscan presence and/or those who mentor individuals in the Franciscan life were also invited to come to the annual conference.

This informal organization has held a conference every year from 1997 to the present time with the exception of 2003! Click here to see a sampling of topics and presenters over the years.

In 2000, the name was changed to reflect that it was open to men and women: Next Generation of Franciscans.

In 2008 the name was changed again to Next Generation of Franciscan Mentors (NGFM). Mentoring in a Franciscan context was recognized as a specific contribution that this small organization could bring to the Franciscan family. This name change emerged out of an increased recognition and inclusion of individuals and groups which extend the Franciscan charism. In addition to Vocation and Formation Ministers, religious community Leadership, Associate Directors, and Retreat Center Directors were invited to be a part of the annual gatherings. 

These last few years have been a time of reflection in light of changing needs, and the name further developed to reflect an increasing clarity of identity and purpose:

As a new decade begins in 2020, here is our organizing team. The fruit of our latest discernment brings us to a new articulation: Franciscan Mentors: Engaging together for a collaborative future
